As I was leaving New Braunfels last night, I heard the distinct voice of Ms. Carolyn Wonderland coming from the airwaves of KNBT 92.1. I hadn't done a showcase recently. For some reason, I just couldn't decide who to talk about. Really though, the words just didn't seem to flow when I tried to plan it. There are lots of great ladies who rock. I want to get to them all and intend to. It's not like I have a deadline. I am, after all my own boss in this endeavor. When I heard Carolyn, immediately in that moment I knew that was who I needed to write about. The first song I ever heard from her is a song called Bad Girl Blues a few years back. It's a song about being a girl that drinks, smokes, and carries on in a way that isn't considered lady like. Quite the honest reflection of someone looking inwardly at themselves and owning up to every fault they see. Maybe even when others don't see those faults in you. For some reason I tend to identify with those kind of songs. There is more truth to them than the happiness and sunshine tunes normally sung. Carolyn gets a lot of comparisons to Janis Joplin and rightfully so. There is a certain soul and ease with the song choices, vocals, and arrangements. I would like to think if Janis was still alive she would have sounded like what Carolyn is doing now. She lives in Austin and often comes to New Braunfels and San Antonio. I really need to get to one of her shows soon. I have selected some tunes below for you to check out.
If I am not mistaken, this is a Janis Joplin tune.
